Ok, we all want to be super healthy, but sometimes that goals feels like it falls well below all your others. I understand. While I am really committed to staying fit and healthy I often feel guilty if I put that over my financial and work-related goals. And that isn’t a good thing!
So today, for #selfcareSeptember I am giving you the inside info on the easiest way to start your day off healthily.
It all starts with a glass of warm water, and a squeeze of lemon juice…
To feel your best all day long, you need to prime your body. That means we want to cleanse out all the toxins that we may have accumulated the previous day, through our skin, lungs, hair and food so that we can keep our elimination system working on all cylinders. And the best quick fix detox is good old fashioned lemon water.
(It is especially crucial after a night of a few alcoholic beverages, because your liver really needs that little boost).
I have been standing by this morning trick for the last 2 years, ever since I started trying to improve my skin and I found a lot of research that eliminating toxins through liver cleanses etc were the way to let your skin shine.
As always, I didn’t want to spend tonnes of money on specific liver tonics which are all just marketing, so I started with the humble lemon juice water and I swear by it. I have no idea if it actually helps, since I started a lot of other healthy lifestyle changes at the same time, but it sure does seem to keep everything in balance for me.
So what gives warm lemon water these great effects?
Lemon water is alkalinising
An alkaline diet has been a major buzz word in the past 12 months, with celebs from Elle McPherson, Gwenyth Paltrow and Giesel Bundchen swearing by it, it’s no wonder that the rest of us want to get on board. And there may be some merit to this hype. Our diets, with their extreme amount of processed food, caffeine, sugar and soft drink have put our bodies incredibly out of balance (hello, spike in diabetes?!) and one of the lesser acknowledged detriments is the acidic environment that our bodies are experiencing. The reason that a highly acidic diet is damaging? Because the body won’t let it stay acidic. It works extra hard on the days that you consume a lot of acid to get the pH balance back to its natural state – draining you of your energy and increasing your risk to inflammation and infection. While you don’t need to adopt an alkaline diet in order to feel your best, it never hurts to give your body a helping hand with its regulation so it doesn’t need to work so hard. That is where our lemon water comes in.
It mimics the natural acid found in the stomach
This primes your stomach for digestion and metabolism from the very start of the day and for every meal that you eat. It also stimulates the liver to produce bile which is necessary for digestion and helps with all and any indigestion complaints.
Lemons are a natural source of vitamin C
Don’t worry about shelling out money on big ticket vitamin C supplements where you actually risk overdose if taken too liberally. A little lemon in the morning will give you a small dose of natural vitamin C, helping to fight off bugs throughout the year and keeping you feeling fit and well every day. This dose of vitamin C (plus all the antioxidants packed into these little guys!) helps maintain youthful, shining skin, free of acne and blemishes (which was the reason that I really started to drink it every day in the lead up to my wedding, and never stopped!).
Lemon water eliminates toxins
This affect on skin is partly due to lemons toxin elimination effects. It stimulates the kidneys and helps to produce more urine, cleansing the blood and eliminating toxins in the process. It works on the liver in this way too, to stimulate detoxification there too. It even helps your digestive system with toxin elimination by loosening the toxins that are held in the digestive tract, making them easily removed by the liver and kidneys.
It gives your brain a boost for the day
Packed full not only of vitamin C but potassium too, your daily dose of lemon juice can help to improve brain and nerve function, helping you to stay on top of your game all day long.
And a little bonus? It improves your breathe! So for those all-important meetings that you have to be on pointe at or if you suffer from halitosis (bad breathe) give this a try and see if getting those toxins out of your system helps to get rid of that odour.
With all the money that we could spend on expensive health treatments, I am always keen to find cheaper alternatives. This is probably one of the cheapest that I know and actually does seem to work.
