Do you have any goals on your vision board that you haven’t started to make a plan for or committed to that first step? Can you remember making excuses to yourself why you aren’t taking action on these important things? Or have you refused to even make that vision board or admit what goals you want to achieve, because that would mean you need to start taking action?
It sounds like you need to get over a fear of starting something new, and we are going to do just that!
I see this all the time, in myself and in those around me on the web. We want to start things, we know we need to start things, but actually doing that, feels almost impossible.
And it generally comes back to not being in the right mindset for the big goals that you are setting and feeling overwhelmed and fearful of them. Fearing your goals is a perfect example that you haven’t laid the groundwork on your mindset well enough to actually tackle those goals.
It is likely that you have some serious blocks holding you back from success – fear of failure, fear of disappointment, fear of poverty, fear of hurting others or fear of success even. It’s not that they aren’t valid fears in some aspects of your life, but when they hold you back from starting something amazing, they are extremely damaging to your present and future success.
Often, we are just feeling really safe in our snuggly and cozy zone of comfort. Which feels and sounds lovely, but trust me, to really move the needle on your life, you must get out of that comfort zone, and into the realm of taking action – even when it scares you.
So, what can you do if you feel like you want to take action, but your scared, and don’t know where to start?
Let me walk you through a little 5-step process that you can do right now to help you take action in an easy and gentle way. If you feel like you need more help and time pushing through your mindset to success then this is a link to my free course – Mindset Shifts to Success – where we shift your mindset and find your success in 4 days and get you started on all those things you were afraid to do. If taking action and becoming successful is something you are serious about in 2017, then my free course is something that you really need to take.
Ok, now for those 5 quick and easy steps to getting you started:
- Identification and Soul Searching
Most of the time, when we move to a higher level of success in our lives, a certain amount of soul searching and internal honesty is required. If you aren’t prepared to really figure out what scares you about your goals, then we can’t turn that fear around into something positive.
So take 10 minutes and write down, in big capital letters, what you want to start taking action on right now.
Underneath that, write down why you want to start to take action on that, so you know your why. Underneath that, write down a few things you are scared will go wrong if you start this goal.
I’ll give you an example:
I WANT TO START A PODCAST
Why? So I can reach more people in my audience and expand the message that I am sending, to open up new doors and give me new skills.
What could go wrong? I could sound stupid, I could waste my time, no-one might listen to it, it might make me sound unprofessional, it could take views away from my website, I might stop after a few months and look flaky, I might be taking on too much and overwhelm myself.
Ok, so this is a pretty real action and fear that I was addressing this month, luckily I have done the work to move through it, so I can show you how here.
The fear that I identified as being the strongest for me was that I might be taking on too much for something that could just waste my time.
We’ll unpack that in the next step.
- Unpacking Your Fear
Now, once you have circled that most prominent fear you have, really look at it and think about it. Let it soak into your mind for a moment, and then write down the absolute worst thing that would go wrong if that fear came true.
Could you recover from that worse-case scenario? What would you need to do to bring your life back to normality? Would that worse-case scenario be worse than the benefits you get from your why?
Back to the example:
My biggest fear was that I would be taking on too much if I start a podcast.
So, the worst thing that could happen is that I have to stop and I would feel like a failure. Ok, I could recover from that quite easily, it could take awhile for me to build my confidence back up but it is definitely not as bad as the benefits from my why.
So, what do we do with that knowledge?
- What Would Lessen Your Chances of Failure?
Now that you know what could go wrong it’s time to make a plan to prevent it going wrong.
This is going to be your go-to guide for all the things you need to do, or avoid, in order to lessen your chances of that failure.
This step shows you that you actually have a chance at making this project or goal a reality, without inevitably failing.
So the question is, what should I do to stop that big fear from happening. Write down as many things that you can think of, in as simple steps as possible to make it super easy to refer back to.
Back to the example:
So, the worst case scenario, if I become overwhelmed creating a podcast is that I would have to stop and feel like a failure.
Things that could prevent my worst-case scenario:
- Do less formal episodes, to remove the pressure of perfection and the overwhelm
- Make each season shorter, and take a break if I need to
- Start at 1-2 episodes a month and build up from there if it works out
- Make a regular recording time, and stick to it
- Don’t listen to the replays
- Maintain my blog to the same high standards
- Don’t make the podcast the most important aspect of my business just yet
- Remember that I have no real knowledge in this area so everything is a learning experience
So, now that we have looked at what could help to prevent the “worst-case scenario” from occurring, look back at the why you wrote at the top of the first page.
Is it worth it?
For my example, the why completely overshadowed the fear I had once I broke it down like this. And I think it will for you too.
If you wanted to extend this exercise and really overcome all your fears, do steps 2 and 3 for every single fear that you wrote down.
This will give you a collection of rules (for lack of a better word) that you should follow while you are working on this project which will lessen your chances of failure, and help you to keep moving forward on this and future projects.
- Take One Small Step
Now we have done a bit of soul searching and planning and you have decided it’s time to take action, so you need to actually take action.
I always recommend doing this by taking one small step first, completing that, and then identifying the next smallest step you can take to move forward once more.
Even once you get more experienced, less scared and better equipped with your goal, this method of identifying the smallest thing you must do in order to move this goal along is really beneficial. It doesn’t overwhelm you, and gives you an infinite number of steps that you could take each day, and fully accomplish.
The point of this step is to build confidence and get the ball rolling.
- Map Your Progress
Now that you have taken that first and second step on your journey, always focus on how far you have come with your goals, right back to when you were too scared to even make a start on them. Remember your why, and keep making small steps.
I would write this entire process down in your journal or online documents, so that you can refer back to it all the time.
If you find a new fear popping up which makes you want to stop your progress, go back to step 1 and start all over again with that new fear.
Just try really hard not to actually stop making some kind of progress or movement because once you do, it will be so much harder to start again.
Make, and use your momentum and keep going! I know you can make amazing things happen!
