I have no doubt that a vision board is the up and coming way to goal set. They are becoming far more popular as people begin to understand the psychological and the universal energy behind them. This is great because we are realising and accepting that working just for the sake of work and success isn’t getting us results anymore – we need to have some solid mindset preparations behind the work that we are doing. A vision board is a great mindset shift because it bring your big goals right to the forefront of your day and keeps you focused. But I think they should be utilised even more because they give us a great framework for goal setting. If you plan and set your goals correctly then they give you a very clear focus on the life you want to lead plus they physically and subconsciously help you to achieve those goals.
Too often we set goals that aren’t in alignment with our true desires or we don’t take the time to dig deep and acknowledge what is actually wrong in our lives that we want to change. By focusing on creating a tool to use at the end of your goal setting, you get a much clearer picture and are basically more honest with yourself about your goals.
I started really believing in vision boards after I stopped seeing great results from my traditional goal setting. After a few years of seeing little result from the amount of effort I was giving my goals I was at a stage when I didn’t have the time to set goals in a traditional way anymore. I couldn’t give up every week, month and day to “goal setting” and I had lost interest in the goals I set myself as a New Year resolution. A vision board was a perfect way to hone my goal setting skills all in a short amount of time and then leverage the tool that I had created to make sure I achieved those goals.
If you are at a point where you want to focus and achieve more than New Year resolutions, or you struggle with goal setting in general, read on and see how a vision board may be of benefit to you.
Because the truth is that a vision board is about so much more than pretty pictures and something to look at. It’s about more than putting furniture, cars and houses on a piece of paper and wishing that you had them. A vision board is a tool to help you create a life of purpose. It gives you a bigger picture to work towards and it gives you a real sense of purpose. This is far more powerful than what you can create with goal setting alone.
Do you find yourself disheartened by one or more of these situations?
Why a Vision Board Beats Goal Setting
You constantly change your mind throughout the year about what you want
If you are always getting distracted by new goals or losing interest in your old ones you are probably not setting goals in the right way when you do plan them. This is a really common problem when you haven’t designed a complete and whole picture for your goals and your life. You don’t see where each goal fits in the scheme of your life. You may have initially picked a few things that you know will make a positive impact on your life but further into the year you don’t see how they play into your bigger picture, so you lose interest and move on. If you find this a problem, you need to start constructing a bigger picture view of your life. A vision board is your bigger picture view.
You find goal setting exhausting
Do you feel like you just don’t have the mental stamina to do all the soul searching that is required for serious goal setting? Goal setting shouldn’t be a strain, it should be so exciting! You are creating an entire reality for yourself and a plan for how you are going to achieve it – that should be motivating and inspiring, not draining! If you find that you just can’t get into the vibe of goal setting then creating a vision board is the way to go. Rather than just listing out goals you get to see those goals actualised and you get to see what it will feel like to achieve them. A vision board is the most effective method for goal setting when you also need a little positivity thrown in there.
You have your goals but you don’t know how to make them a reality
This is such a common problem, at all levels of goal setting! Yes, you know what you want, but you just can’t bridge that gap from here to there. You don’t know the steps to take and you are paralysed with that very first step. A vision board is the perfect way to plan out your path. Besides just knowing exactly what it is you want to see in your life, you can create each step as you go. Because you need to get so ultra specific about your goals, you actually find your step one while you are in the process of making your board. If you can see the outcome of your goal in front of you, and you feel motivated and you will actually know what you need to do to get there.
You love setting goals but you never follow through on them
Every year you set yourself some big goals and I’m guessing you are always pretty excited by them, right? But somewhere along the way they fall away from your conscious thoughts and you don’t think about them again until the next New Year.
This is either because they don’t motivate you long term, you forget about them entirely, they were never a really good fit for you or you they weren’t very SMART. By creating a vision board you are creating goals that truly align with you and you feel a deep connection to and you are constantly reminded of them every day. If you place your vision board somewhere that you can see it often, then the goals you set don’t exist for only as long as your goal setting session, they exist long term.
Even when you achieve your goals they never seem to really change your life
Do your goals feel hollow and empty once you achieve them and not give you any long lived joy? Or did it feel great to achieve, but you are still exactly where you were beforehand? If this is you then you really need a vision board. You need to be doing things that are adding up to make this big reality come true and you need to know what the reality is that you are working toward. If you are used to setting small or short goals, then a vision board will change everything for you. It can be an adjustment starting to set big goals for yourself but the truth is you have probably been avoiding them because it’s just easier to make smaller ones and tick them off faster. We need to get over the fear of setting big goals and a vision board is the way to do it.
Once you have a vision board you will start to set goals which are going to really make changes within your reality.
You find it hard to organise your thoughts about your future
You don’t necessarily change your mind, you just don’t know exactly what it is that you want. Your plans seem foggy and they can go off on tangents because you can’t always decide which is the best choice for you right now. You need some dedicated time to goal setting in a way that clearly shows you what reality you are creating. If you see it in front of you then pretty quickly you can weed out the things that you don’t truly want and start to get more focus and structure to your plans. Sometimes we can’t see how different areas of our lives fit together unless we see them in images which makes it hard to set goals which will work together well.
Negativity keeps getting in the way of you achieving your goals
A common complaint about goal setting is that it always starts off great when you are feeling really positive and motivated but what about when real life gets in the way and you don’t have the motivation to keep going? A vision board is the answer to this issue, for sure! One of the best things about a vision board is the positive powers that come from seeing those images every day. It actually trains your brain to believe you are already living those images, and since that is your happiest life, you instantly feel happier! I never feel down for long looking at my vision board, it literally just picks up my mood and shows me what I have and could have. I love that feeling. The best thing? Even if you feel down 10 times a day it only takes 10 seconds to look at your board and get positive all over again.
If you are finding that any of these super common struggles are resonating with you then I urge you to consider goal setting through a vision board. If you do it right then the clarity, direction and guidance that you have makes it pretty much impossible for you not to achieve amazing success year after year. Plus, you don’t just achieve your goals for the sake of achieving them – you will actually know when you have achieved your ideal life and be able to sit back and enjoy living it rather than constantly spinning your wheels in the rat race.
